Did You Know? The Difference between THC and CBD

  • Share

THC and CBD are terms often used when talking about cannabis as they are the two most biologically active substances found in it. But what are they exactly?

With the growing global legalization of cannabis, consumers are becoming more and more interested about their options. The commonly discussed cannabinoids are the two most biologically active substances found in the cannabis plant, THC and CBD. But what are they exactly?

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)

THC is the main psychoactive compound present in cannabis. While it possesses medical and therapeutic benefits, its commonly recognized as the cause of intoxication or getting ‘high’. It affects the way you think, feel and act. THC can be consumed by smoking, oils, edibles, tinctures, and capsules to name a few.

The effects of THC differ for each person and depends a lot on the strains and concentrations consumed. More often than not though, THC elicits certain side-effects like elation, relaxation and a sense of calmness. This is beneficial in relieving pain for medical users that suffer from illnesses like cancer or PTSD. However, THC is known to have a direct effect on motor skills and cognition, as well as induce paranoia and depression. Because of this, users should be conscious of how much THC they consume.

CBD (Cannabidiol)

CBD is an increasingly popular term today and one you may come across often. Many companies are infusing their products with CBD due to its remarkable medicinal properties. Unlike THC, CBD doesn’t deliver the ‘high’ sensation but instead, lessens pain and other symptoms. It’s often purchased as gels, supplements, gummies, extracts and oils.

Due to its fame as the ‘safer’ alternative to THC, CBD is the most popular cannabinoid. It is used to treat a number of medical conditions and diseases. Research suggests that it’s an effective remedy for pain, epilepsy, depression and anxiety. Further experimentations explore other conditions that can be treated with CBD. Presently, CBD is considered as a potential therapy alternative for cancer patients.

Whether you’re a newbie curious to explore cannabis or a seasoned consumer, it’s important to know what you’re ingesting and how it affects you. Whichever cannabinoid you prefer to use, always remember to consume and experiment safely.
